The simplest solution is to make open and transparent gov't -- that's the only way to reduce deception and bogus arguments on all sides. The more opaque gov't gets, the greater the inevitable deception, and requirement by officials to say "trust me".

Such simple things as making it a felony for any gov't funds to be used for any covert influence of the American media.

Make it a crime for major public officials to knowingly lie to the public.

Simple.

It won't be done w/o a virtual revolution, because the gov't has already gone so far in deceiving the public as to make it routine at the top levels.

Without such changes, the issue will come to a head as the economy crashes in '03-'04 as the Barron's-referenced $30+ trillion in rapidly-escalating gov't debt can no longer be ignored, and the only solution is militarization of the country.

Your term "Velvet fascism" is amusingly similar to "Friendly Fascism", by Bertram Gross, actually a good book. He's not as my Assie friends term it, "an aging raver", or having as you say "conspiratorial nightmares", but a well-educated methodical writer w/o an axe to grind, w. a sense of humor. The book is hard to get, but well worth knowing about.
