I don't think they're attempting to compete against VRTS. VRTS essentially builds fancy backup software. They are partnering with the storage vendors. If the functionality that VRTS provides ends up a ubiquitous part of the operating system then VRTS will go down. Ask Netscape.

As for Oracle versus SQL Server I believe that your information is not correct. Typically, Oracle is used for VLDB (Very Large Data Base) applications while SQL Server is used more frequently in the middle and lower tier due to it's more favorable pricing. In fact, SQL Server is taking market share from everyone in that arena. (That's one of the reasons why IBM purchased Informix. They wanted to jump into the middle tier to compete against Microsoft.)

For that reason I must also dispute your claim that BEA and IBM have taken the application server space. In fact, IBM is a very large operating system OEM for Microsoft, particularly for their new line of eServer blades.

If you have information that refutes this then I'm all ears...
