I think that you now agree the broad category of "euthanasia" is a messy area.

Euthanasia is your word. I'm not talking about euthanasia. I'm talking about suicide and assisted suicide.

If we do not have the right to end our lives, we are not truly free. Existential decisions are the most salient of freedom issues. I'm not talking about doing it, only having the right to do it. Suicide should not be illegal. Assisting someone in suicide should not be illegal. As a practical matter, the onus is on the one who wants to die to be clear about his intentions to protect his helper. And on the helper to be sure he's covered. Iffy circumstances should be treated as murder to obviate abuse.

I don't see anything murky about that. It has nothing to do with taking the initiative to put, say, a disabled person out of his misery. That is murder. No one has the right to take the life of a person who had the opportunity to give instructions for ending his life and did not do so.
