You would think, but it's been tried.

See Andrew Weil's work, he's a Harvard MD and botonist.

Work on various psychotropics has been banned due to DEA laws and regardless of potential benefits. The critics say it's because the gov't can't afford to have any beneficial studies appear. The apologists say because it's already illegal, it shouldn't be studied.
