John, give it a few years and cars will have CDMA SnapTrack links back to base and the Check Engine light will say just what's wrong, where to go, what to do, what it'll cost etc.

"Come in number 5, your oil needs changing. Bay Number 3 at QuickLube, 1km ahead, is available if you want to do it now."
