>>More so than Pinochet, Saudi royal family, and that dictator with the bad wig in Pakistan? Need I point out that these are US buddies?<<

I would welcome tribunals against all of those people. None, however, are in the same class as Saddam.

>>Clinton got "there" to change the headlines from Monica and his sperm on his blue dress. Look at the dates. Ask yourself why Clinton waited two years before helping a nation undergoing genocide at the exact moment he was being clubbered to death over his sex life involving an intern and cigars. <g> <<

Clinton was certainly accused of that by the republicans. Perhaps it is true. However, his secretary of defense, Wm. Cohen, a republican appointment and well-respected, passionately refuted these charges. Cohen stated that he would resign rather than involve US troops in a politically motivated venture. He said that involvement was contemplated and planned well before Monica.

My personal guess is that both political and geopolitical motives were involved. What else is new?

My point is that neither France nor Germany are motivated by altruism. I don't doubt that the enormous pools of oil in Iraq have a role, but it is not clear to me what that role is.

Also--I am not charging that self-interest is bad. The first obligation of every country is to protect and enhance the vital interests of its citizens. Clearly compromise of principle is part of the game. I'm just responding to the righteousness of Europeans about US motives-- as if they were immune from self-interest.
