it is true, you can buy them.

However, one of the things that I have learned is that it is insane to exercise employee stock options to hold. That is how many people got wiped out in silicon valley. They bought the stock (often on margin) and pay the tax at that price. Then the stock drops and they have an asset with declining value which they paid full taxes on.

I don't think you will see a whole lot of exercising to hold in silicon valley in the foreseeable future.
