Just because the US helped the French doesn't mean they should go along with whatever our cowboy president thinks of. Remember that it was the French who helped the US achieve its independence from England. They are very reasonable people and are much more cultured than the people here. Not much racism in France and very brilliant medicine is practiced there. They have good reason for opposing a bully when there is no-one left who would stand up to the bully for shear fear of the bully.
