JohnM,

We are getting off topic here, but my chest is clearing :-)

This concept that teh tax proposals only help the rich is off base. Because the rich pay 90% of the taxes - any relief will seem outsized as an absolute number. As a percentage of income - they are not getting as much as others.

The alarmist liberal view mixes these issues and points out the absolute dollar figure saved and compares it to the relative size of the population receiving it. When you get to Gores richest 1% - does anyone mention how much of the tax burden they pay? No. And hence my earlier post.

As far as deteriorating infrastructure - maybe in CA, NJ and the North East. Too much cutting of local taxes during the high times and an assumption that they would never end. We have that same problem here - but its just hitting. And guess what? All done under democrats. The current govenor (who I like and voted for) inherited a terrible financial situation.

He will likely get booted for a republican, for all the wrong reasons :-(

As someone working in high tech - I can tell you that employee stock options during the heyday of the bubble were fuelling surplusses and Government excess to the hilt. The Bubble burst and no more 39.5% federal tax, no 7.775% state tax and no medicare tax (1.45%) except from our regular income - and we all lived for our options :-(

On Social Security - one can argue about the income cap, but since there is a benefit cap, few politicans want to take that one on.

John
