thecow, re Windows XP and MS Messenger: I removed MS Messenger totally. Even the reference to it under OE TOOLS is greyed out. Recently I noticed the mouse pointer turning hourglass for a second about every minute or so [whether I was in a spread sheet or online didn't matter].
Ctrl-alt-del and looking at processes running showed MSMSGR.EXE running. I closed it without ill effect. It kept coming back within minutes.

I finally renamed it [it's in PROGRAM FILES>MESSENGER] - immediately after closing it. Had to be fast before it loaded again. :)

So far so good.

Just something to share because Google finds lots of links for solutions to this problem. So it must annoy many users.
