You're quick to put the blame on someone, even when it is undeserved. I asked for something to be done about the posts because they were highly offensive to gay people. (Of course others may have asked also, I don't know. I can only hope other people also asked.) I didn't ask for anything to be done about JLA, but I can't say I'm sorry he's gone for a while. What he posted was vile. We don't use the "N" word as an epithet, without social consequences, and we shouldn't (imo) use any other words that are disrespectful to whole groups of people. I think it was hate speech, and I don't like to see hate speech. In a private venue with rules, like SI, I don't have to see it, if management agrees with me. Of course JLA has every right to stand on a street corner and say such things, but my guess is that he wouldn't have the nerve to do that.
I complained about the wording and I'd do it again. If I happen to run across you or Ray or anyone else saying things I think are equivalent to that, about a class of people, I'd turn you in. Without the "Q" word, I think it's just par for the course name calling, a personal issue, which is of course babyish, but not objectionable to me.
I know some of you like and cling to your hate speech, and you've every right to do it in places protected by the constitution, but this is not one of those places, as we all know. You've got a lot of latitude here, but thank goodness really vile hate speech is prohibited. I am sure some people who post on SI are gay, and they shouldn't be subjected to that kind of thing, any more than a black person should have to see the "n" word all over the place.
I would have posted this earlier, but I didn't get around to seeing this whole dust up until just now.
Remember (you people who like to bring this up), you want the boy scouts to be able to exclude gays. Well, SI has every right to exclude people who talk badly about gays. SI is a private enterprise, they can have rules, and I'm glad they do.
