Paul,
I thought about this last night. In Europe, particularly in Kosovo, these two countries largely abdigated responsibility to the US. They do so because their "socialist" economies cannot support a robust military. In Germanys case add GREENS to the reasons. How can they be the powers they want to be if ultimately they wont back it up. And conversely how do they expect to live in a world with Saddam running ME with WMD? Quid quo pro anyone or are they just posturing now and will come around. The only thing i could glean from their positions is that they really are saying they want perpetual inspections in iraq backed up by a perpetual US presence. US does not imo have the resources for this. We cant mobilize and demobilize and remobilize either. Or is this all a game, to persuade Saddam that despite best efforts Crazy USA is coming anyway so perhaps you should retire to a suitable, pleasurable location???? mike
