John,
Its easy to say democracy is desirable but its not always attainable and sometimes in order to satisfy national interest concens, one has to be realistic. Iraq is certainly about WMDs in saddams hands that will give him leverage over the reason and over us. It is also about oil. This is the reality. Of course if we could convert Iraq to democracy this would be a long term positive development but conversion to democracy for them might be almost as difficult as conversion to christianity, not to mention judaism. Remember in college when you wanted to take an elective but there was always a damned prerequisite you had to take. There may some of that that needs to go on first whether we like it or not. Most of asia that is now democratic evolved that way. India is a notable exception. Enough the rant. Mike
