The discussion that these countries can't be democratic is pretty self serving - it hasn't been tried.

Japan is considered democratic today, but before McArthur it was a fuedal society. Before Perry, it looked like the middle ages.

Lets not underestimate the people of the region.

As to being 'realistic'. We were doing that in Iran with the Shah and look where that got us.

The cold war is over. There is no reason for us to support tyrants anymore in the long run - but maybe short term while we arrange for energy supplies elsewhere :-)

One argument is that we should pick up and run. The money spent in the ME could subsidize shale and coal projects to mitigate the cost impact of lost US supplies. Let the Europeans and Asians roll there own...

Another is install a democracy that could fund its infrastructure by selling their oil to the west.

Leaving and becomming independent sounds good, but what happens to the region?
