all right, i looked around a bit and here's an idea. why not go here... The Network Neighborhood Icon No Longer Appears on the Desktop

... and try the opposite?

for starters, though, i'd look at the TweakUI program. it would appear that that alone can be configured to hide the icon.

short of that, you might try playing with uninstalling a network client such as Client for Microsoft Networks or Client for NetWare Networks, if one is installed on your computer.

all in all, it looks like TweakUI is your best bet...
