Jacob-- >>Then there is no way to win the war. Even if we strong-arm the governments of Islamic countries into allowing us access to their territory, guerrilla forces can never be defeated if they have a large sympathetic civilian population.<<

I'm mixed on this. The outcome of Afghanistan has exceeded my expectations-- and by much more--the expectations of my cynical friends. Using force is not incompatible with presenting an image of compassion and acceptance. Indeed, that is what made Alexander the Great so successful in around 300BC, and that is what we are/should be doing in Afghanistan and, perhaps, Iraq.

Somehow, I don't think either the Taliban and Saddam are hard acts to follow. I was surprised by the greetings of the Afghans to the UN and would be less surprised if we were welcome in Iraq.

In addition, I, to repeat, think Saddam has committed crimes against humanity and should be brought to justice. This would serve to influence world history about the accountability of all leaders. And, as previously stated, he is hardly alone as a suspect.
