Noel,
I was trained at the University of Chicago by Hans Morgenthau who was quite prominent in those days--he wrote the text book in Foreign Affairs. He was always warning us liberal kids about the danger of putting ideology, idealism and principles ahead of national interest. But we all agreed that a principled foreign policy was in the national interest. A conundrum that we faced in our debate today.
A conundrum all civilized countries face. I would maintain that the US has had many bumps in the road but principals and ideals have always been important. FWIW during the height of the vietnam war as an antiwar student, I wrote a paper claiming american idealism(democracy) had as much to do with our involvement in vietnam as the anti communism hysteria of the right. Many folks who supported the war wanted the best for the vietnamese people. No oil there, you know. Mike
