Global mobile phone demand will grow 9.3% year-on-year to 475 million units in 2004. The growth depends largely on a continuing handset replacement demand. This estimate comes from JEITA, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association.

According to the association, replacement sales accounted for nearly 62% of the 396 million handsets sold last year, and replacement momentum would carry on to dominate worldwide handset sales this year and next year. This year's sales are estimated as 435 million handsets.

China will consume 25% of handset in 2004

Asian sales are expected to reach 239 million handsets in 2004, of which 125 million units will be sold in China, contributing more than one-quarter of worldwide sales. North America will account for 55.21 million units and Europe 104 million units, according to JEITA's figure reported by Nikkei Market Access

JEITA estimated that 91 million handsets were sold in China last year and demand would grow by 16 million to 17 million units a year. It estimated that 108.97 million handsets would be purchased in China this year, of which replacement purchases are projected at 53.97 million units, or 49.5% of total sales.
