The fundamental blunder the US made in Viet Nam was even earlier, when it decided to support the reestablishment of French imperial rule in Indochina.

I have read that Truman did not want to do this. The French had some leverage in Europe at the time. It was a close call. I have also read that the ceding of control to the British of that area from MacArthur led to the French takeover. I know that we did have an OSS team with Ho, and the British ordered them out. Too Bad. Of course, it just means Ho would have taken over much earlier. But at least all that would have happened, from our standpoint, is cries of "Who Lost Vietnam" in the '50s. No Vietnam War.

One sidebar. We had troops who escaped from the Philippines early in the war and got to Vietnam. When they met the the Vichy French Army running the place the French turned them over as POWs to the Japanese. Another reason I don't like the French.
