George,

Re: There is something terribly ironic about the fact that a tiny of group of neo-con fanatics

I find nothing ironic about this at all. A study of the history of extremist organizations clearly indicates that a small cadre of well-organized and zealous true believers can regularly overwhelm the fragile institutions upon which most extant governments are based.

Classic examples of the sort of coup that the Bushista neocons pulled off include the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia and the rise of Nazis in Germany in the 1930's.

In all three instances, the cadres understood very well the necessity of gaining control of the media, replacing real news with propaganda and disinformation and stressing a hyper-nationalist agenda.

I cannot recall an exact analogy for the way the Bushistas have exploited the "victim" attitude of Americans regarding the 911 tragedy in the Bolshevik experience, perhaps other students of this early history can fill in the gaps in my knowledge. But clearly the Reichstag Fire in February, 1933 was exploited by the Nazis to consolidate power, destroy "enemies" and destroy civil liberties just as the Bushies have used Operation 911 to further an agenda of repression of civil liberties, a reign of terror and consolidation of power into an ever more secretive and anti-democratic government.
