I'm not sure if I can speak universally about this, but at my firm nonmarginable stocks (and options which of course have no loan value) can be comingled with marginable stocks in a margin account provided the account has sufficient equity based on the marginable stocks' market value in the account and the debit balance. I always keep nonmarginable stocks (and options) in a cash account (which is integral to any brokerage account) so they can not be hypothecated.
