I think we're going there, that's the direction history is going. But it can't happen without US participation, and that probably won't happen till we get another Nixon, someone who convinces Americans to habitually distrust their leaders. Until then, we won't be ready to rein in the Cowboys, the Oliver North types.

In today's environment, the public is willing to go along with American citizens being declared EnemiesOfTheState/EnemyCombatants, hauled in front of secret military tribunals, with death sentences handed down, and no appeal. The geniuses who wrote our Constitution had exactly these scenarios in mind, when they tried to institutionalize the RuleOfLaw. They were thinking about Napolean, but it applies just as well to Nixon, and Bush the Younger.
