Bush II decided to reinstate a tradition, abandoned in his father’s presidency, of sending a floral wreath on Memorial Day from the White House to the Confederate Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery

Confederate veterans should be honored.

They were fighting against a Federal government which they believed to be invasive and oppressive, a concern later proven valid beyond a doubt by the Washington DC-based invasion of the South. (And subsequent behavior since, I might add.)

95% of all Confederates never owned a slave.

The Union did not state that the purpose of the war was to free slaves until halfway through the hostilities. Until then, the reason given was to force the seceding states back into the Union.

Slavery was and is wrong.

But 95% of those soldiers died to protect their land, homes and families from an invading army. Slavery did not enter into their decision to take up arms.

Honor their courage and sacrifice, as we honor that of the men of the conquering army.
