>>I have a really different memory of Viet Nam than you do. I remember that once peace demonstrators had gotten the attention of the nation, and the press was covering Viet Nam with pretty probing journalism, and color television, which was just then becoming widely affordable showed men with their guts hanging out, dying and dead, and men crying on the battlefield, and the Buddhist monks immolating themselves on the network news, it all became very close and DISTURBING.<<

Perhaps there was a dual phenomenon going on. The one you mention and the one I mention. A distancing as well as an arousing disturbance.

>>The thing that disturbs me about it is that there were years of appeasement of Hitler's land grab and atrocities by governments in Europe, and by the U.S. as well. <<

Absolutely agree. Being of Jewish heritage (not religious at all in a Judaic sense), I am particularly sensitive to the the ways in which a number of European countries as well as the US avoided the war as long as they could. Of course some countries went out of their ways to appease. Not to mention the Vatican.

The question of reparations is an interesting one, not just in regard to the Jews, but for Native Americans, African Americans and Native Hawaiians. Probably best to avoid it on this thread--I'm sure it would bring up some nastiness.

>>I think there is still a lot of anti-Semitism in parts of Europe.<<

In Europe? Right here in the good ole US of A!!!
