Dear Steve: Having been raised in the South in an Era when they taught the TRUTH in school rather than POLITICAL CORRECTNESS I can tell you the issue was far more complicated then that. I am sure you dont want me to go into detail on this thread but in general, the South was an Agrarian economy, shipping most of its product and receiving most of its finished goods to ENGLAND which was well along in its industrialized state. The North was becoming industrialized however they still were not as efficient as England nor were their products of the equal quality. So, there was natural resentment in the North that they couldnt use the South to bolster the industrialization and were losing much business to England. Slavery was a side issue. Yes, there were many people, especially the Quakers that felt very upset about the institution of Slavery but in general most really had other things to concern themselves about. Lincoln himself never even FREED the slaves until it looked as though the Border States of W. Va., Maryland and some Western States might go with the South. He did that for political reasons to FREEZE their position with the North.
Then, just as now, many people had differing opinions so to pick out one politician from the South and quote HIM is the same as picking out Teddy Kennedy and quoting him as though he represented the majority opinion. jdn
