Iraq would, without sanctions, be the co-equal, if not superior, of other Middle East powers, and even now may be. They certainly have expansionist designs, witness their wars against both Iran and Kuwait. And once Saddam gets nuclear weapons, it's Katie bar the door.

BTW, all our engagement with China hasn't defused the Taiwan situation, which still has the grave potential for major conflict, nor has it gotten them out of Tibet.

I have grave misgivings about going to war with Iraq, but I am becoming persuaded that the alternative is even worse. The UN mission under Blix is useless. France and Germany merely want to retain their lucrative contracts with Iraq which violate the UN sanctions but what do France and Germany care about that?
