Capitalism, Scientific Method, and Democracy that have allowed western societies to excel
Yeah it's funny how that goes... When Europe was in the dark ages the Arab world entered an era of enlightenment after Mohammed's arrival, spiritual, political and scientific. Contributions in science mathematics and biology are many. After the crusader era when Europeans learned much from the Arabs Islam underwent I believe schisms (they may have no unified head officially as Queen of England or Pope but they have had just as much sectarian violence as Christians) one upshoot of which was mainly that science and the scientific methods was eschewed. It's interesting also to note that while the Church in Europe was the vessel for conserving Greek and Roman knowledge through the Dark Ages they largely held (virulently actually) it back from anyone outside their clique, prolonging the darkness so to speak...
