My name was her name
this small dimpled child
standing on a swing
laughing
she was the daughter of my parents
as I am
slept in my childhood bed
wore my first cowboy suit
she is now no more than this
small balck and white square
a point on the graph of my existence
left far behind on the questionable axis of history
I am not the women of yesterday
nor the girl in this picture
the minute after the camera's eye
seized on this small creature
she changed
and in every minute since
twisting in time never fast enough
to catch that other self
forever in photographs
what a laughing lie
we are told
about our nature
we are no more our pasts
than we remember our dreams
which like our pasts
slips through our fumbling fingers
like brittle sunlight
and falls to our feet
in present splinters.
