The color and gender barriers had been broken long before these appointments were made.

It is typical that when a Republican breaks new ground by appointing a black or woman to the Supreme Court, or appointing a black Secretary of State, you would suggest that the "color and gender" barriers had already been broken. The Dems did everything they could do to prevent the appointment of a black Supreme Court Justice, and couldn't stop it. The Dems and NOW fought Sandra Day O'Connor's appointment.

The reality is that these are accomplishments ONLY when a liberal does it.

However, at the time Mr. T. Roosevelt invited a black to dinner, the color barriers were still very firmly in place.

Roosevelt did NOT invite a black to dinner with the concept that he was "breaking new ground". He thought nothing of it, and was, in fact, totally shocked by the outrage that followed it. The motivation was, clearly, political.
