Having kids did it. Travel just put some larger perspectives on my thoughts. I'd explored leftist philosophies when young, but for economic reasons, I went into the USN. I saw how authoritarian bureaucracy would stifle individualism and creativity and produce expensive solutions. Especially if it was dogmatically enforced. I knew Marx was wrong - you had to embrace human needs regarding self-benefit. Enlightened self-interest became my motto.

Then, seeing my own kids, watching their development, I began to think about the disparity between these kids and those of others. I've always been a naturalist and scientist, so the cause and effect between nutrition (input) and health (output) of natural systems started me thinking more globally. What if you could adapt naturalistic principles that were already in-grained in natural human behavior? That's basically what I do at my job. I've really moved away from the "punishment model" because it sublimates the behavior into sneakiness. Discipleship doesn't do that, especially if you can show results.

One day, I hope the government starts doing it.
