Mephisto,

The DU is a waste product of the production of fissionable U-235. It has a natural decay rate of about 60% of naturally occurring uranium. There's a tremendous amount of uranium that is naturally occurring and a lot of the alarms and warnings that we get from the environmental community are not based on good science.

There was an interesting item in Scientific American a few years ago that caught my eye. There is a plume of radioactive material that is spreading from a holding pond at the Hanford Reservation and it is heading down to the Columbia River. There is a proposal to ameliorate this spill and prevent it from "contaminating" the river. The scientist who wrote up the article was chortling because the plume that was expected to enter the river had a lower rem value than the river itself does from natural decay of radioactive isotopes upstream. I'm not sure most people are well enough informed to make intelligent decisions about how devastating DU is. As I said before, I find that both the hysterical environmentalist crowd and the Department of Death propagandists are both known liars. So the truth lies somewhere between these two extreme claims about how bad DU happens to be.
