Being a cop is tough sometimes. It doesn't excuse going overboard though. We put a lot of trust in cops and its a sad and potentially scary thing when they abuse it. On the other hand there is a gray area as well and a cop can go that far without even realizing it, and then get in to a lot of trouble. They are human. They have fear and anger like anyone else and occasionally they face some very dangerous situations. One problem in LA was that they did not have good training on controlling unruly perps in non lethal ways. They had used chokeholds but there was a big protest against them so they switched to beating. That helped lead to the Rodney King situation. Its too bad that cops can't have something like a Star Trek phasor set to stun... Tim
