This is related to your comments about the Rhapsody enterprise storage management product. It looks like mcdt are splitting off a software division that they acquired earlier.

I don't have too much experience with enterprise storage management software, but from what I do know, VRTS is the only company with a platform neutral fully functional suite, its hard to see where all these niche players fit in. But maybe others here have more direct experience.

McData Stirs Up Software

McData Corp. (Nasdaq: MCDTA - message board) is hoping to pump up its software unit, geared around its SANavigator management software, and expand into new markets. But it's still many miles away from becoming a storage software powerhouse.

And McData's SANavigator unit faces a growing number of competitors, including Computer Associates International Inc. (CA) (NYSE: CA - message board), which just released its first product in this category, BrightStor SAN Manager. Other vendors angling for a piece of this pie include Brocade Communications Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: BRCD - message board), Fujitsu Software Technology Corp. (Softek), AppIQ Corp., CreekPath Systems Inc., and InterSAN Inc. (see CA Spans Into SANs).
