Saddam's ambitions to develop WMD's and to seize control of the Persian Gulf's oil reserves combine to make him a threat to the world economy. Regardless of how much or how little of the oil we directly consume comes from the ME. That is why the international support for the 1991 Gulf war was so overwhelming.

If we give Saddam enough time, the next time he invades neighboring countries he will have the means to engage the world in nuclear blackmail.
