The crucial sentence:

" Hamas officials had indicated they would accept a cease-fire but asked for guarantees from Israel to stop attacking its leaders. Hamdan said he knew of no Israeli guarantees."

Hamas threw the olive branch out there months ago, but Israel pretends not to see it. And, remember that Hamas is the most extreme Palestinian faction. So, the Israeli mainstream is less peaceful than the ultra-right wing Palestinians.
