Sig, RE: I wont buy that study of short selling right away without more support.

Well, I can tell you that there are three instances where companies that I had sold short had gone on attack against short sellers, and one instance where a company that I had bought went on attack against short sellers.

In all four cases the stock price dropped sharply, and for very good reasons, and in all four cases, this drop was not temporary.

In addition, about 4 years ago a study was published in Financial Analysts Journal examining the performance of stocks that had been heavily sold short. The study defined "heavily sold short" as short interest more than 10% of the shares outstanding. The study showed that on average stocks that are heavily sold short not only underperform the overall market but also decline on an absolute basis.
