Lizzie,

They have a couple of different deals.

With DirectTV, they just provide the guts of the service end; DirectTV does all the billing, sells the equipment. I imagine the same arrangement would be hold true if the cable companies ever got off their collective butts and offered Tivo.

With an OEM like Sony or Toshiba, Sony/Toshiba will manufacture the stand alone equipment, and the consumer will then sign up with Tivo for the service. After the consumer buys the box, they become Tivo's customer, regardless of where they get their signal.
