Jackson is right up there, no doubt, but has the blot of his poor performance at The Seven Days staining his record. Some would say his initial inaction at First Bull Run (which probably gave him his nickname) should also count against him.

His eccentricities might have caught up with him over the long haul as well; on the march once, he had all but one of his division commanders arrested for allowing stragglers.

For sheer excellence in choosing ground, deploying troops effectively and winning consistently against overwhelming odds, I would go with Cleburne as the best the Confederacy ever had. His suggestion early in the war to arm blacks probably cost him the promotions and recognition he deserved and his death in the senseless assault on Nashville ended any slim chance the South had to win the war.
