Through the project, funded with a $200,000 federal grant,is expected to save money, cost effectiveness isn't the real reason behind the effort.
It's a demonstration project, meant to show what can be done in large buildings as well as private homes, in the public and private sectors.
The project is part of a larger conservation effort to drum up demand for solar and other renewable energy systems to drive cost and make these sources -solar,wind,geothermal and waste products - more attractive.
It will also be one of the largest projects in the Midwest involving solar technology that's part of the building, rather than a separate unit simply plugged into it.

"I really like the concept of it integrated right into the building. That really appeals to me." said Jim Leidel, the university's energy director who sought out the grant for the project.
