Bill,

I am disappointed after the State of the Union. The case against Iraq was careful and complete but it was far from compelling. No matter how justified the war, leading America into battle with the country divided along (mostly) partisan lines is bad policy. It is a failure of leadership.

Powell going to the UN on February 5 is brilliant. Powell has the credibility to deliver the message. I hope he delivers the Stevenson message. Much rests on Powell's shoulders (and I expect Tony Blair to kick in some help too). There can be no doubt anymore that Bush is going to war with Iraq. His conviction was very clear. It is perhaps the most compelling part of his argument, Bush really believes that Iraq is a threat that needs to be defeated.

I really liked the hydrogen R&D program. Instead of silly programs like Kyoto, use America's technology strength to attack the problem and build a competitive advantage in the new technology.

Tripling the size of the AIDS program in Africa was also smart. There are many cultural and logistical problems to overcome but not trying would be a sin.

Totally disagree on the ban of human cloning. To much important research will also stop and I don't think China is going to do the same. Silly to mix morality with science that way.

It's over to Colin Powell to get the big job done but I fear it will be to late to avoid dividing the country.

Paul
