The only one's who'll really profit on this are the lawyers.

One of the ironies of the patent process is that the more valuable a patent is the more ferociously it is litigated. Alexander Graham Bell may have invented the telephone, but he also spent virtually the entire life of the patent in court defending it. E-Data had better have some very deep pockets if it expects to reap the sort of profits from this patent that many believe it will. High-stakes patent litigation is extremely costly.

As I understand it this patent will expire in 2002 or thereabouts, so even if litigation only drags on for five years, its remaining useful life will be quite short.
