Call for user experiences with Qualcomm G* phone.

I am planning to rent a G* phone for an upcoming trip to Chilean Patagonia, at a cost of $10 per day plus airtime. The phone that they have available is the QUALCOMM GSP-1600. Does anyone have experience using that phone?

I am particularly interested in performance in mountainous areas. We will be spending a lot of time literally in the shade of huge mountains, albeit with pretty good horizons in other directions. The G* coverage map shows Chile and Patagonia covered like a blanket. Any idea whether this is an accurate representation of the coverage?

Finally, anyone have any views as to whether the airtime charges are expected to come down a lot from today's lofty levels? They are charging $1.79 a minute for the G* minute +$0.20-0.40 a minute for the terrestrial connection to Chile or the US. That is on top of a $58/month subscription charge.

Would appreciate any views and/or experiences with this phone or G* service in South America.

Cheers,
Thomas
