My own parents, who were children at the time of World War I and who were middle-aged through World War II, were, I discovered, unaware that after losing about 30 million people the Soviet Union came back to drive the Germans out and to largely destroy the German army. From their point of view, Russian invovement was a minor action that assisted the United States in defeating Germany.

But I certainly agree that the United States ended up, amazingly, with the most effective soldiers and equipment in the world. Paul Fussell, who as a young second lieutenant was seriously wounded fighting the Germans, thinks that the morale among German soldiers was, to the end, even higher than that among Americans, saying "They were fighting to build something that they believed in." But our equipment overwhelmed them, along with the adventurous fighting spirit that seems part of American genetic makeup.

United States armed forces obviously did make a huge difference in the way the Second World War turned out and continue to be by far the best in the world. But the mythologizing of that war in films and even in documentaries that turn it into an American epic and play down the role of other countries tends to reinforce a "go-it-alone" mentality on the part of too many people.
