This gets to people's politics heavily. In 1991, the Kuwaiti royal family used a New York PR firm to attribute baby killing war crimes in Kuwait City to invading Iraqi soldiers. The week before the invasion Kuwait had been in the headlines for human rights violations! Very poor timing to motivate Americans to "free Kuwait". The problem was nobody could find any corroboration of this baby killing.

I was countered that there was no proof of NO baby killing. I said I kept that proof with the proof that little green men weren't controlling the White House. They weren't swayed or amused.

Oh well. Scientific method is not universally accepted, even though, ironically, those who would abandon it, type at keyboards, take their medicines, and use technology that was developed according to those rules. As scientists, it is our lot to try to move the big rock of public opinion to one that is supported by reason. To some extent this is a fool's errand, but what else are we to do?
