Mao was a criminally insane despot, who was responsible for the murder of tens of millions of Chinese. He especially targetted educated Chinese people, the same way as Pol Pot and Stalin targetted the educated. I guess the despots feel that they can further their own selfish and worthless ambitions by keeping the people uneducated and uninformed. As you say, one has to wonder about someone who would want to be known as a "Mao".
