I think most people (Americans, anyway) would agree that employee options are excellent. I own my own business, and am from several generations of small business owners. Nothing is more motivating than ownership.

Not being an accountant, I can't really speak to the question of how to treat options. I think that if I gave an interest in my business to an employee, it would be a tax-free transaction for me, and for the employee, who would only pay tax on profits. But I am not a publicly held corporation.

Don Lloyd, whom I posted to, understands accounting and has strong opinions about accounting for options. I am always interested in his comments.
