Mobile operators 'still dreaming' about 3G timing, returns Forrester Research AFX.COM January 30, 2003 BERLIN -- Most mobile operators are "still dreaming" about the timing and potenetial proceeds of third generation UMTS services, Forrester Research analyst Lars Goddel said at Deutsche Telekom AG's news conference on 3G here Goddel said he rejects operators and vendors' assumption that 3G will be a major innovation drive for the economy. "The first reason is that UMTS will arrive very late and most mobile operators are still dreaming," Goddel said. Twenty-six 3G licence holders polled by Forrester in the autumn expect 50 pct of their users to be using 3G services by 2005, but Forrester believes the proportion will be just 10 pct, and only by 2007, Goddel said. "The second reason UMTS won't be a major innovation driver is that operators mistakenly assume users will pay for UMTS. So far, no compelling business case has been presented," he said.
