T-Mobile To Launch 3G In UK End '03 Or Early '04

Thursday January 30, 6:15 am ET

BERLIN -(Dow Jones)- T-Mobile International , the mobile arm of Deutsche Telekom AG , Thursday gave the firmest dates yet for when it will launch its third generation, or 3G, mobile service in two of its key markets.

Rene Obermann, T-Mobile's chief executive, told journalists Thursday that it would launch its 3G network in the U.K. at the end of 2003 or early in 2004.

In Germany, he said a launch would take place in the third quarter of 2003.

The timing of both launches appears to have slipped in recent months.

In August the company told Dow Jones Newswires that a service in Germany would be "start in the middle of 2003", while in the U.K. the company would "aim towards offering commercial service by the end of 2003."

In Germany the timetable cannot slip much further as the license says T-Mobile and the other 3G operators must each have a service covering 25% of the population by the end of 2003.
