"Back to profit UMC joins peers in capex cuts"

By Mike Clendenin EE Times (01/29/03 06:46 a.m. EST)

snip:

"...But with fab utilization numbers dropping UMC joined with its foundry peers this week by trimming 2003 capital expenditure and indicating a flat beginning to the year. UMC said it would spend $500 million this year on technology upgrades and maintenance at its plants, paying special attention to the ramp of its 300-mm wafer capacity. That compares to an original target of $1.6 billion for 2002, which was subsequently heavily scaled back. Previous estimates had put UMC's 2003 planned capital expenditure at $900 million. TSMC and Chartered, on differing fortunes have also scaled back plans for capital expenditure in 2003 (see this January 28 story on Chartered and see this January 27 story on TSMC)."
