Recent developments among reform-minded groups and so-called "progressives" give scant hope that disaster can be averted. The pendulum which has so frequently been swung in our history from grasping to good governance, as epitomized by the "robber baron" era being followed by the "Progressive" era seems not be in play this cycle. The move toward madness is more pronounced today than I've ever sensed before. Sensible reforms like Oxley-Sarbanes or McCain-Feingold are passed in Congress and immediately shreded in the regulatory maw which is firmly in the grasp of the corporatists. Counterforces to corporate malevolence and excess seem completely overwhelmed at this point by the forces of corruption.

That's at the heart of what Tyler misses. The rotten heart of human nature, the propensity for corruption to overwhelm systems based on human decency.

Selfishness, per se, isn't enough to destroy a nation. But selfishness combined as it is today with criminality in the upper echelon of this society will surely lead to the end. Remarkably, those of an evangelical persuasion are hoping to accelerate the process. Understand madness and you understand the present course and the curse of the Bushista Crime Cult.
